Kauai Boat Tours Blue Dolphin Charters A & B Properties
a consideration for choosing a tour other than Blue Dolphin Charters
If the highlight of your vacation to Kauai is a Napali Coast sailing tour with dolphins & whale watching, scuba diving & snorkeling you may want to choose a tour other than Blue Dolphin Charters, owned by Terry Donnelly.
For the past 18 months Blue Dolphin Charters has placed their mascot, a white cockatoo parrot, outside the building they occupy at the Port Allen Marina Center which is managed by A&B Properties, Inc., a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. We, the residents of Hoonanaea, an elderly housing project managed by the State of Hawaii, have repeatedly requested that the management of Blue Dolphin Charters place their cockatoo inside the building. The noise, screeching and screaming, created by this cockatoo is extremely disruptive to the peaceful enjoyment of our environment.
Disregard for senior citizens
Over the course of the past 18 months we have sent emails to Blue Dolphin Charter owner, Terry Donnelly, and letters to Charles M. Stockholm, the Chairman of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. which owns A&B Properties, Inc. We have expressed our concerns about the noise created by this cockatoo and its effect on our senior citizens.
Mr. Donnally has not replied to our requests. Mr. Stockholm has referred the matter to the property manager for Port Allen Marina Center, Ms. Trinette Kaui. Ms. Kaui has asked the management of Blue Dolphin Charters to keep the bird indoors but the management has refused her requests. Because the cockatoo issue is not specifically addressed in the lease, A & B Properties feels that there is nothing further they can do to address this matter.
Disregard for needs of the mascot
Captive parrots which are not given regular mental and physical stimulation, become notoriously wild and noisy. The Avian Welfare Resource Center website addresses this issue which is a concern to any bird lover. It is our observation that the Blue Dolphin mascot is treated as an asset like a boat or computer. Although the bird is feed, given water and its cage is cleaned, no attention is paid to its natural demanding needs for attention, curiosity & playfulness. Because of the lack of attention by its owner, it is likely that the bird is not capable of bonding with humans which contributes to its ongoing behavior.
The following is from the Avian Welfare Resource Center website:
"Whether captured in the wild or born in captivity, parrots are not domesticated animals like cats and dogs. They are still wild animals. Their natural curiosity, sensitivity, intellect, playfulness, and ability to form bonds with humans can tempt people to keep them in captivity. Unfortunately, the traits that make parrots so intriguing are the same ones that make them extremely difficult to live with as companion animals. Many parrots find themselves displaced as their natural behaviors and needs clash with human expectations. "
We, the residents of Hoonanaea, feel that the reason the owners do not keep the cockatoo inside their building is that the noise created by the bird is too disruptive to their business. The result is that the elderly and handicapped residents of Hoonanaea are subjected to nearly constant onslaught of screaching all day long for 7 days a week. The neighbor nearest to the bird is over 90 years old!
A request for your help
As stated above, our concerns have not been addressed and the management of Blue Dolphin Charters has refused our requests to relocate the bird indoors. We are asking for your help. If you are concerned about the welfare of parrots and you are considering a boat tour, you may want to seek an operator other than Blue Dolphin Charters.
